Indigenous Tour around Santa Marta
During this fascinating tour of the indigenous community of Katanzama in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, you will immerse yourself in the cultural wealth and preservation of ancestral traditions.
The initial meeting with the guide takes place on the main road, specifically in the Perico Aguao sector (Km 59 road Santa Marta - Palomino), starting point for a nature walk to the village of Katanzama. On this journey, travelers will get to know the rubber tree, a sacred ceremonial site for the community, while they enter the lush vegetation. Along the trail, a detailed view of the cocoa crops is offered, highlighting its relevance and distinction as the best cocoa in Colombia.
Once in the indigenous town, an interesting tour of local traditions begins and where we will discover the most notable points of interest of the Arhuaco reservation. During this immersion, an enriching dialogue is established with authorities and prominent members of the community, who share their perspectives and knowledge. Here, visitors have the opportunity to participate in the assurance ceremony, a symbolic ritual of protection and connection with nature, by placing a cotton thread on the wrist.
Within the ancient traditions, a unique experience is offered to learn about the art of weaving the renowned Arhuaco backpacks, a craft skill transmitted from generation to generation exclusively by indigenous women. This process not only provides a deeper appreciation of local craftsmanship, but also highlights the cultural and social importance of these deep-rooted practices. In addition, travelers will have the opportunity to learn about the poporo, the fique bush, cotton, the coca leaf and the significant role they play within of the culture and daily life of the community.
Concluding this journey, you visit the local school and explore the charming Katanzama beach, further enriching the experience with the natural beauty and cultural authenticity that characterizes this region.
